European Stability Initiative
The European Stability Initiative (ESI) is a non-profit research and policy institute and a Think tank for South East Europe and enlargement with offices in Berlin, Brüssel, Istanbul and Wien. The ESI produces films and reports on the Balkans, Turkey, Central Europe and the South Caucasus.
==History==
The ESI was founded in June 1999 in Sarajevo. Its founders, multi-national practitioners and analysts, were members of international organisations like the OSCE, the United Nations or the World Bank.〔(Einer, der auszog, Europa zu verstehen ) (German). ''Die Zeit''. Retrieved 4 August 2013〕 It was founded "in recognition of the need for independent, in-depth analysis of the complex issues involved in promoting stability and prosperity in Europe". Currently the ESI consists of 23 members, including analysts and editors. Chairman is Gerald Knaus, an Austrian sociologist.
The ESI is among others financed by governments and foundations from Scandinavia and Ireland, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Robert Bosch Stiftung〔(Völkerverständigung Mitteleuropa, Südosteuropa, GUS, China: Übersicht der bewilligten Fremdprojekte 2008 ) (German). All the publications of the European Stability Initiative are widely distributed and available on its website free of charge in order to promote discussion and debate among the policy community.
